Advocacy

Advocacy is at the heart of the work of The Refugee Centre and connects every part of what we do. By leveraging our frontline experience, the Centre transforms the lived realities of refugees and newcomers into evidence-based policy recommendations. Working alongside community and political partners, we identify the systemic barriers refugees face and advocate for more equitable and inclusive policies. Together, we work to shape public policy and advance lasting change in Quebec and across Canada.

Victory at the
Supreme Court!

After years of legal battles, refugee claimant mothers in Quebec will finally be able to access subsidized daycare. The Supreme Court of Canada refused Quebec’s appeal in Attorney General of Québec v. Kanyinda, confirming that refugee claimants have the right to access subsidized childcare. In 2025, The Refugee Centre’s legal team intervened in the case to highlight the intersecting discrimination faced by refugee claimant mothers.

The Court cited the Centre’s intervention and recognized intersectionality in its equality analysis.
